20something Financials
One of the most recent trends in cost cutting in the last few years has been eliminating cable television costs. While this may seem like a great savings, if you haven't called your cable internet provider in the past 6 months and you're not in a contract-fixed price, you are MOST LIKELY paying much more than you should be. One call can definitely lower the price but be prepared to wait a while. And if that doesn't work, you could try a different provider with a lower introductory price.
There's just one easy method of saving money for your future. For a financial tool, I love Mint which allows you to view all your financial accounts in one place. It allows you to budget, see your monetary trends, and warns you when you get unexpected fees or when your bill is due. I'm not a big budget person but I set it up more so to warn me when I spend more than I would like in certain areas (e.g. clothes).
For my cell phone bill, my siblings and I are still on our parents account with unlimited data. My siblings and I each pay a third of the bill and it's actually cheaper than paying for individual accounts for us. Best of all? My parents don't pay a penny!
Some other financial advice:
Rainy Day Fund: Save enough money for three to six months without pay
Don't get into credit card debt. But take advantage of credit card rewards if you can.
Pay student loans.
Take advantage of your company's 401k if possible. Don't throw away free money.
Online Bank Accounts have higher interest rates.
Get a bank with ATM-fee reimbursements
Learn to invest. Invest. The traditional rule to determine how much money you should have in stocks is "100-(Your age)" (e.g. for me 100-23= 77% in stocks). The rest should be in mutual funds. Take advantage of a Roth IRA if you can.
Take advantage of health insurance if you can. For eyeglasses/contacts, do it online if you can too.
99% of the time, don't pay full price
Never stop saving.
You learn a lot without paying an extra penny with the Internet. Take advantage.
But remember that you're young. Remember you are in your prime physical ability, take advantage of that. Enjoy your youth. I could take that advice more often.
