Band of Brothers
I thought I was done watching television series when The Newsroom ended. But I made the simple mistake of starting HBO's Band of Brothers. I have usually been more interested in the American Civil War and have abstained from the World War II mini series even though the raving recommendations from friends and the reviewing community. If you have any interest in the Civil War, watching Ken Burns' The Civil War is a must (a bit lengthy though).
After two episodes of Band of Brothers, I've really enjoyed it (there is only ten episodes). It's definitely a change of perspective of what I usually like to watch; instead of the technology surrounding the war, the political tactics, the winning/losing aspects, and how the overall atmosphere of home and battlefield, Band of Brothers focuses solely on the battlefield (particular from a company and downward perspective).
Not many shows or literature about war portray the emotional toll it causes; nor did anything I learned in grade school help me understand the hardship that comes with war. Maybe it's just not something that can be completely comprehensible for children, teenagers, or even adults; that could be beneficial to being sane when learning about something so cruel and disturbing. Nothing compares to hearing stories from actual war veterans though.
