BFG
Steven Spielberg is to direct an film adaption of Ronald Dahl's The BFG. I remember reading the book in fourth grade and was completely mesmerized by it. If you haven't read the book, you should; it's quick and entertaining. The concept of placing dreams into heads and destroying nightmares has always fascinated me ever since that book. And I can only imagine if the book was written for children today, the other giants would have been dealt with in a much nicer and gentler way.
It seems like many of my favorite books from my childhood are becoming big budget films (The rights of Redwall were purchased in 2012). But this isn't much of a surprise since films are just another method of telling a story. And if the original story is enticing enough, it'll surely get told over and over again. But with technology, one method has become films. Before that, it was radio shows. Before that? Plays. There are numerous of telling people your story (e.g. writing, music, art).
But it's not guaranteed that you will enjoy the films that are made from books that you loved reading. You probably envisioned the book in your own unique way as books allow tons of imagination to be had (and you probably don't have the money/time to create a big budget film). But that is how storytelling is; you will like some storytellers more than others, whether that by authors, artists, musicians, directors, or just vocally from friends. It's a skill. How will you tell your story?
