Cities
More than any other time in history, people are living cities. But what exactly is the draw to mega cities? It certainly can't be the extravagant housing costs or the repulsive hydrogen sulfide smell (I apologize to those who relish that scent). It could be that people of the cities are obsessed with the exaltation that comes from walking in crowds especially the weaving around the slow walkers.
Of course, cities are known to contain the nightlife, restaurants, entertainment, arts, and the total convenience of everything in a small area; all of which come at an increased price. But I think the most significant lure of the city has to be the people. It's about being in such a diverse population but experiencing the feeling that you are part of something bigger that you may not get in a rural area.
With so many businesses in cities, comes increased opportunities. But the probability of serendipity dramatically increases (assuming you leave your apartment). There are more spontaneous moments to be had just because of the denser and bustling lifestyle. Spontaneity often drives people out of their routine/habits. The unforced, unplanned interactions captive city dwellers similarly to students to colleges and universities. It's seems so unnatural and takes a great deal of effort to schedule events while free-will (even if it is routine) interactions seem more genuinely enjoyable. It may be connected to expectations and/or enthusiasm.
But the city isn't right for everyone. Hollywood has incorporated the lure of cities whether it be its natural spontaneity or being the optimal environment for casual sex. But there are smaller cities for those who want a good mix of urban/rural. But as The New Yorker may say, "There is only one real city."
