Engineering Pride

So for the most part I've talked about the extreme amounts of pride I have on Electrical Engineering at the University of Connecticut. It being some, if not the best, years of my life so far. But there's much more to come. I've realized this at the open house that Raytheon held tonight.
Since Raytheon is predominantly a government defense contractor, there isn't much that us, the employees, can say/show to our friends and family. As a result, the 40 plus hours spent at work for our family and friends are just unknown to them. With this open house once a year, family and friends can see what the engineers are doing at work. There are not many opportunities for this to happen. Especially to see the products and sometimes actually demo it.
There was something special I really took out from my first experience at an open house. This was the satisfaction and enjoyment of the employee when their families see what they work on. To see how proud the employees are at the products they've helped built. Knowing that their spouse, children, grand children, or friends are impressed by what they see. Seeing the smiles of my fellow engineers were well worth the volunteering hours I put in. And it's more than just the wonderful smiles; it's the whole atmosphere. Where children are running around, making the environment seem more more joyous, since only people with credentials could come in the facility on every other day of the year. It's enjoyable seeing what my fellow engineers do on their time outside of work.
These moments absolutely make me feel so proud to be an engineer. Just seeing how proud the family and friends of their engineer. And of course seeing the gratification of the engineer with responses to their product that they've spent a great deal of time on. Once again, I give Raytheon and my fellow employees is putting on a great engineers week experience and open house.
