Fire Detectors

Fire Detectors. You probably have at least one of them in your place. Whether it is functioning correct with a power source is another issue. I've been thinking about the usefulness of majority of fire detectors. As I said before, cooking in a small apartment without setting off the fire detector is nearly impossible. As a result, I place the fire detector in another room while I'm cooking (reinstalling it after, of course).
But just how practical is it to have a fire detector that isn't connected to a source of communication to relieve the hot situation? I understand a fire may occur while I'm sleeping and the alarm will awaken me but I'm probably away from my apartment than in it. With today's technology, wouldn't it make sense to have a smoke detector connected to Wifi or at least a phone line? And with sensor becoming smaller and more efficient, the device could also sense other dangerous situations like carbon monoxide. This could be especially important for people with pets. I'm surprise these devices aren't in more households.
P.S. It's amusing that fire detectors include "DO NOT PAINT" notices. I guess it's a remember for those who paint layers upon layers in apartments.
