Fog Delays

When I opened my door to leave for the work on the best day of the week this morning, I couldn't see farther than probably fifty feet ahead of me because of the fog. Fort Wayne seems to have many more foggy mornings than anywhere else I've been to. I saw the fog as symbolism to what about to happen nationally with the potential government shutdown (the last one was in 1996) and the confusion with the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) enrollment starting tomorrow (The online marketplaces for insurance go online. Not very complicated).
But with heavy fog, comes school delays. Since my arrival in Fort Wayne, I'm pretty sure students have missed more classroom time due to fog than snow. This is obviously not good academically for the students but I'm sure majority of them welcome it on a Monday morning. I remember having my eyes glued on the television to see if my school district cancelled/delayed classes. Back then, the news stations didn't post updated list very well on the Internet so you had to watch the bottom of the news for your school. It was exhilarating hoping to see "Cranston Public Schools" on the screen and once I saw it the first time, I waited it to loop one more time just to confirm that I wasn't hallucinating. It's saddens me to know that the children won't experience that intoxicating process; instead, they will find out on the Internet whether that be news stations or social networks.
Back in my day, we didn't cancel school because of fog. We had a few days cancelled due to mercury exposure. The generation before ours responded with "Back in my day, we used to play with mercury." I wonder what the current generation of students will say? "Back in my day, we didn't cancel school because the textbook servers were down"
