Growl, Moan, Scream
Today was my semiannual teeth cleaning; I have to maintain my beautiful imperfect smile! It seemed like it would be a normal cleaning session. Boy, was I wrong... My stomach growled like when a dog senses slight danger to its owner. But my dentist hygienist is the best in the world, so in order to lessen my embarrassment, she made her stomach growl too. While her growl wasn't as obnoxious as mine, her stomach was right by my ear to hear. How comforting!
This led me to think about the odd sounds that people make in everyday life. Take moaning. It can be used to show displeasure, tiredness, disappointment, and pain, but it can express excitement, satisfaction, and relief. I never know which of the meanings moaning has in the bathroom; maybe it's both. Screaming can have dual purposes too. It can be a natural reaction to being scared, being angry, or being extremely excited. I find it amusing that we make similar sounds/facial expressions for such contradictory emotions.
