Huge Tenure Decision
Education may have made a significant step in advancing the current condition of teachers. Today, a judge ruled that tenure laws in California are unconstitutional. There is no doubt that teacher tenure is a widely fierce debate around the country. But coming from public schools, I've seen and heard too many stories of horrendous teachers; many of which had tenure. With tenure and teacher unions, firing teachers for poor performances can be extremely difficult.
With budget cuts in many education system, the number of teachers may have to be reduced. With the current system, the first-in first-out reduction process is common. This is harmful for the students and their education as it can result in keeping poor performing tenured teachers and the release of new promising teachers. While speaking to my peers who have taken up the teaching profession, this is worry for them and is quite disheartening. The hiring/firing practices in education can often discourage effective potential teacher from emerging.
But with this said, of course teachers need rights and protections. But the current situation with tenure is not good enough for our educational needs. Just because it's what's been done in the past, doesn't mean it's the right solution; we must change for the better.
Any thoughts on tenure for teachers?
