Indiana's Religious Freedom Restoration Act
As you probably heard, Indiana signed their Religious Freedom Restoration Act into law within the past week. While causing an uproar, Indiana will be the 20th state to do so. But it's the timing of Indiana that has the state in trouble; with all the gay marriage rights and other civil right movements. It is particularly troublesome since the NCAA men's final fours will be held in Indiana's capital, Indianapolis (though the law doesn't go in effect till July). The NCAA and other notable companies (e.g. Eli Lily, Salesforce, Angie's List, Apple, NBA) have sworn against the state because of this law and many more will probably join them.
There is very little doubt that this act has any another but the LGBT community in mind. The law is very ambiguous as what is considered substantial burden and the state said it would clarify the wording in the near future. As stated before, it's terrible timing for the state and other states may rethink about attempting to pass similar laws, especially with all the public backlash.
It's just bad business for those who intend to take advantage of this law and hard to believe that many will. There is no doubt the law, as it stands, will impact Indiana's economy significantly.
I'm not very religious but I don't avidly avoid businesses with religious affiliations. It is their right to have and express their beliefs. However, I do usually avoid try to avoid businesses that strongly promote their religious beliefs, especially when certain groups of people may feel uncomfortable. I prefer businesses that respect the inclusion of all people.
