Internet of Things
The next step in electronics is Internet of Things or IoTs for short. Like the cloud, it's just a fancy name given by technologists. To keep it simple, IoTs is just the idea of all electronics communicating with each other. When I say all electronics, I mean ALL of them including your phone, watch, TV, home (lights, locks), refrigerator, washer, dryer, stove, car, and other electronics/sensors owned by others (when given permission).
It's going to have a significant impact on our personal lives and as a society as a whole. It will increase efficiency and help us (and our devices) communicate better. While it can be beneficial, there are numerous safety and privacy concerns that need to be looked at as we move on. Think of the possibilities: All the electronics will dynamically adapt to each individual and their lives.
But all of this will take an effort from all technology companies since without standard and compatible protocols, it would be impossible to have a pure Internet of Things experience. I can see some companies resisting in this effort as they tend to have their own proprietary services. Corroboration is key but I'm confident it'll happen eventually.
The Internet of Things will be the next major phase in technology, just like how the cloud was the last popular technology lingo. Without the cloud, the Internet of Things could not have existed.
