It's A Bubbler!
A few days ago, one of my friends posted this link on my Facebook wall; then another friend sent me the same link. It's fantastic that people around me know what interests me. This article shows the difference on how Americans speak presented in a colorized map. The most significant aberration I had to accomodate after leaving Rhode Island is definitely the use of "Bubbler"; when all your life you call something a certain word, that's what it will be forever. "Bubbler"'s origin is from Wisconsin by Kohler Water Works; now it has spread to Massachusetts and Rhode Island (How did this happen?!). The use of "Drinking Fountain" bothers me but the use of "water fountain" is aggravates me even more (those are used of decoration!). To my friends, I'm sorry you have to deal with my use of "bubbler"; consider yourself more diverse!
These maps are hard too decipher for someone how is colorblind... The second most common issue I have with the difference in speech around the country is what other people call soda; it's not "pop" (that's a elf mascot for Rice Krispies) and "Coke" is a brand! I'm fine with "soft drink" (I'm very compromising). I was bewildered that the south call "Cole Slaw" just "Slaw". "Sneakers" was close to the top of my "Grinds my gears" list (mostly because I am a tennis player). And if you spell ketchup as "catsup", I don't even want to know you.
I have an issue with the long sandwich map; they missed "grinder" which I have heard used all of over the country especially the Northeast.
The craziest one:
I didn't know these existed until I went to Kentucky.
