It's Time, I Think.
Approaching seven years on this Macbook Pro and I am officially in the market for a new laptop. With OSX Mavericks being free, I was even able to upgrade this 2007 Macbook Pro to it yesterday. After a hour old reliable was fit with a new OS and you immediately see which applications Apple is encouraging its users to use: eBooks and Apple Maps; both of which have had negative publicity in recent months.
The changes to OSX is slight and most users will not even notice as majority of users, like me, just do the basics, web browsing, music, photos, videos, and email. They are pushing file tagging and application connectivity between pre-installed applications. Most users will not have much to complain about since majority of the changes are under the UI or minor (e.g. being able to share photos directly from Photobooth or the Finder). The Mail application seems to be saving numerous amounts of draft mails while writing an email and keeping them all. Hopefully, I can fix it or it could end up being quite annoying. And still no scrolling in the calendar application?!
Apple announced the iPad Air, a lighter, thinner, and faster iPad. They put a retina display on the iPad Mini. So this leaves everyone saying "What's next?". If they are following the MacBook Pro scheme, they'll make a larger screen iPad and call it the iPad Pro. Then, they conveniently left off one of the key aspects of the iPhone 5s, the Touch ID. It's strange that it was left out since the home buttons are the same size and the iOS software already supports it.
The Mac Pro was announced to start at the price of $2,999. The targeted market group has not changed.
Now, it's time to purchase a new laptop. I think I have brought it down to two choices, 13" Macbook Pro or the 14" Thinkpad X1 Carbon. (Update: Just informed the X1 does not have a Haswell processor. That is to be released in January...)
