Learning to Read
A couple of days ago, I was reading with my grade-school mentee. The book that was assigned to her was Junie B. Jones Is a Party Animal, a book about a young girl, Junie, going to a sleep over. Though my mentee didn't finish reading the book, I was disgusted with the book. The grammar was absolutely abysmal and was done on purpose; it was written in a young girl's perspective. My mentee even had trouble reading the book out loud because the grammar was so terrible. It used words like "runned", "richie" (as an adjective), and used "that Grace" instead of just "Grace" when speaking about a friend. The book is unreadable and I can't comprehend how it should be used to educate children how to read.
I must admit that my grammar is probably just as obnoxious as the children's book, but my blog posts do not go through a publisher (and its editors) and isn't used to teach reading (thankfully). Maybe text with slangs maybe advocate children to continue to read. In my opinion, books shouldn't have to sacrifice grammar standards for readers.
