Move Thanksgiving
I am proposing that the best holiday of the year be moved to September. Before dismiss this concept immediately, please hear me out on this:
A few weeks ago, stores started setting up for the Halloween season. And before Halloween day comes around, stores will setup for Thanksgiving or even Christmas. There is just chaos on which holiday to observe whether that be Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and of course Festivus. Then after all those holidays, there's the New Year to celebrate. Moving Thanksgiving to September will spread out the holidays and reduce the confusion/hate of pre-mature retail holiday displays.
An early September date will give more time between holidays; basically it becomes a four month instead of the short two months. This will relieve some stress on the December gift giving holidays. If this was implemented this year, Thanksgiving wouldn't have been in the middle of Hanukkah. Hopefully the holiday music won't be aggravating by the end of it since without Thanksgiving won't be there to force the start of Christmas music. And traveling for multiple holidays, as many people do, will become more worth wild with more time in between holidays. (I came up with this entire concept while trying to plan my trips back to visit family for the holidays.)
One of the major aspects of Thanksgiving, the harvest. In New England, where the holiday originated, harvest season is primary before the month of November; in many cases, September is harvest season for many crops including Honeycrisp Apples!
Another aspect to become closely related to the Thanksgiving holiday is football. The NFL will still be in season, so the traditions may continue! Though, it's early in the season... But it will be warm throughout the country for all the rivalries including for high schools.
In terms of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, I can see it staying in November or moving to September with Thanksgiving. The current date for Thanksgiving was proclaimed by FDR in order to give the country an economic boost by lengthening the holiday season. I think many of us can agree that shopping between Thanksgiving and Christmas is crazy so moving Thanksgiving to September may reduce the crowds. Moving Thanksgiving may also reduce the horrid "last minute, don't know what to get" issue (but probably not). We could even split Black Friday and Cyber Monday up. This may also solve the issue of retail employees working on Thanksgiving.
But most importantly, it seems that majority of people are extremely tired of the holiday sprint by Christmas or New Years. Moving Thanksgiving to September will spread the love and happiness even more and maybe reduce holiday fatigue.
