Multiplayer Gaming
With Titanfall's immanent release is tomorrow, there so much talk of the console wars. Does Xbox One or PS4 have more power? Which one of the consoles will prevail?
Coming from someone who is no longer an avid gamer, I'm not that interested in the two consoles for their video gaming. The entertainment content like streaming videos have become more imperative than the actual games. When I do play games, it's usually with friends; lately, it's been solely sport games (e.g. Madden, NBA, Golf). It's simple and controls have been well established; the learning curb is nearly non-existent for those who grew up with the games.
Multiplayer. For avid gamers, Xbox One and PS4 will be an excellent experience. But other gamers or owners of the consoles, the multiplayer aspect will be hard to take vested interest in. This is where Nintendo rules. They have established and dominated the local multiplayer experience for casual gamers (and some avid gamers alike).
With titles like Mario Kart, Super Mario Bros, Super Smash Brothers, Mario Party, and many others, Nintendo has a portion of the video gaming industry that the companies do not have. These games have a short learning curve and are immensely entertaining especially in a group setting. While you can become an expert at these games, it's easy to see that the games were made with casual games in made. You can't say the same about games like Halo.
I think we have been so fixed to specifications and processing numbers that we forget that games can be enjoyable by the average person. I see Nintendo providing entertainment similar to boardgames but just in a digital form; It's something a group of friends and family can pick up quickly and have fun as a group. For this reason, I feel the Wii U would provide me with the most substance in terms of actual gaming compared to the other consoles.
