My First Job
While talking to my significant other and cutting photos together, my mind went back in time when my cousins, siblings, and I would place individual pieces of jewelry into individual bags with our grandmother. A man would drop off boxes upon boxes full of jewelry every week or so. He would give us bunches clear plastic bags as well and tell my grandmother packaging instructions.
Then, we would spend countless hours placing jewelry in bags while watching television or just having immature conversation about how ridiculous the jewelry was. I was a naive child but it wasn't until I was much older till I realized that it was a method making money for my grandmother, a side-hustle similar to a sweatshop with much better working conditions. It wasn't a terrible deal because we got to see some Disney jewelry/toys and even kept some we wanted (though, I'm not sure if that was part of the deal). My grandmother cleverly turned it into a competition sometimes; other times, it was a struggle finishing the remain box for the day.
Funny how life works. I'm sure you didn't have a job like that as a kid. I'm also pretty sure you didn't get $20/month for like 3-4 months for drinking milk every day. Yeah, my parents were so worried about my height/weight that they paid me to drink milk.
