Not Installing Google Duo Yet
Google released their video messaging application, Duo, today.
Previously, I wrote about how Google has a messy messaging platform. And it seems that Google is following through with Allo and Duo, following Apple's lead with a separate video messaging app (FaceTime) and text messaging app (Message). The "advantage" that Google has is that it will be cross-platform (iOS and Android). This advantage will only matter if Allo/Duo gains massive traction yet to be seen by any Google messaging service.
If you know me well, you'll be surprised to hear that I will NOT be installing Google Duo; you know how much I love Google products. The main reason I won't be installing Duo is that Hangouts is where all my friends/family are already and it functions as text and video messaging (including group video chat which Duo does not have). Hangouts works on desktop as well; it's where I video chat most often.
What will be interesting is how Allo will integrate with Duo. Will Allo have an option to video-call someone using Duo (similar to Apple Message and FaceTime)?
Will Allo/Duo get a desktop/Chrome extension? The best part about Hangouts is the transition between devices, including desktop. Isn't one of the core functions of a message platform being able to do it wherever you are?
