Old Habits
Old habits seem to never die. Every time I arrive in Rhode Island, I have the similar feelings about it. I am glad to see my family but majority of the time they are working. With the combination of being away from the smallest state for the past seven or so years and not being very social in high school, I know only a few select people here. It's not a terrible thing, it is what it is. People move on with their lives and develop relationships that are local since it is easier. It's expected.
I get the same urges as in high school to go take a scroll to Walt's Roast Beef (best roast beef sandwiches ever) or Spike's Hot Dog. It's like the ticking of the living room clock hypnotizes me into my old ways.
The thing about holiday visits is that people are naturally busy. This just adds to the complexity of meeting up with friends. With this, the expansive distances between friends, and everyone's holiday schedule, it's nearly impossible to get everyone together. It would take the effort that most people aren't willing to give (though I did not blame them at all).
For those who do put in the effort to talk and hang out, you have appreciate them for everything they do. Whether that be taking time from their families, traveling long distances, or even taking time off work. Those are the people that will mean the most in your life.
