Performance Development
A couple of weeks ago, I was tasked to fill in my accomplishments for the year as a tool for performance development. This went in line with goals set in the beginning of the year. Today, I wrote my performance summary for the year.
It's fascinating seeing how much actual work I've done in the past year. At first, I didn't expect to have much to write in this summary but the list continued to lengthen as I listed what efforts I led and supported. But more importantly, I remembered how I went about achieving the end goal for each effort. I have developed my skills to become more effective in reaching the results I would like at the end of it all.
One of the most significant aspects for the year is that I have built a respectable and reliable rapport with all my fellow employees. This led to more opportunities to work on more diverse aspects of the program (some even outside the program). This time also allows my fellow co-workers to review my performance. I continue to strive to perform at a level that is usually years beyond someone with my experience especially with mentorship.
Of course, there is always more to learn about certain functionality or developing new functionality. No matter how long you've been in your position, there is always something that can be learned (whether that be personal or professional). I'm not the biggest fan of performance summary but I can see the purpose of it if it's taken seriously. You get to track your own progress and set milestones for the upcoming year(s). And if you can't write about your own achievements, who will?
