Things Engineers Like: Accessorizing

If you know me, I always acknowledge the importance of the little things in life. I even have a Tumblr for the little things (link on the top of this site) and I know I have been slacking on updating that. But in everyday in life, you have to get dressed and present yourself in a certain way to represent who you are. This certainly includes the engineering population.
When you think of an engineer what do you think of? Well most of you may imagine a skinny Asian male wearing glasses who has no sense of style (The Dream, I know!). Oh wow, I just described myself perfectly. Maybe you think of a really well dressed person in great shape (it's possible...maybe). But with any engineer, you'll probably see them with the following accessories: Lanyard with their attached ID, pocket protector, glasses, graphing calculator, and of course all of their devices (PDA (Probably a Palm Pilot), laptop, binary watch, etc.).
Just like any other industry, engineers have their own sense of style and accessories. It may just be a bit different; Construction has their boots; Badminton players always carry a shuttlecock; engineers have their glasses specially made for computer monitors. But remember what's really important, what's on the inside not the appearance and accessories.
A few weeks ago I received the following comment on a previous post:
" Unfortunately, there is no excuse for message this post brings to the common reader. This local reader has received a degree from a school that prides itself in its engineering education and traditions. Further, as engineers gain years of experience and ascent in the corporate ladder they veer from the fundamental schematic reading and writing duties towards financial and leadership roles. Hence, the notion that engineers spend their time working in a dark basement with their pocket calculators enjoying diagrams is outdated and outright rude."
As an engineer, I believe that all engineers spend their time working in their parent's dark basement with their pocket calculators enjoying diagrams. And I 100% believe in what I said and in what I write on this blog because engineers have no sense of humor.
P.S. The picture above is my high school physics teacher and myself. Of course I have a stopwatch and green pen!
