Things Engineers Like: Creating

Engineering according to Wikipedia:
"Engineering is the science, skill, and profession of acquiring and applying scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge, in order to design, build, and maintain structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes. In layman's terms, it is the act of using insights to conceive, model and scale a solution to a problem."
Naturally engineers enjoy building/creating various items. Since it is the beginning of the new year, 2013, I have decided to make a few resolutions. One being spending less time on social networks, reddit, and other similar sites that are innocent indulgences of entertainment. In my opinion, I feel I can be spending that time doing some other hobby that is more satisfying. Right now I'm working on a project that will probably be next week's "Things Engineers Like". I have thought about other hobbies I may like to add to replace the time I spend on those guilty pleasures. So far, I've thought about clay sculpting, painting, drawing, dance lessons, and possibly pasta art (Imagine Bucatini Bo!).
Each of the ideas I had their own drawbacks; I don't have a fire kiln, I'm colorblind, I want to have flexibility in time, and I would get hungry constantly making pasta art. So Marv suggested wood carving. Ever since, I've had the thought of wood carving on my mind. I'm ready to start buying my tools, maybe an introductory to wood carving book, and of course, the wood. I have so many project ideas I would like to create and if it is one percent as satisfying as I hope it to be, I'll be one happy carver. I already know which project idea I want to start with! I can't wait!
Of course, this will coincide with my other projects (I want to get back in the swing of programming). With that said, does anyone recommend any particular tools like wood carving? Or have another suggestion for a hobby that I could pick up?
Tau Beta Pi! Woot!
