This American Life: Education
I'm an avid listener of This American Life and the past two weeks have been a couple of the best episodes in the radio show. (Part I and Part II) The two episodes deal with some of the biggest problems we have and will deal with in our lifetimes: Race and Education.
Part I is definitely more emotional of the two stories and even pushed me to the edge of anger; somehow I wasn't exactly surprised that this happened not too long ago. Part II is the story of Hartford's magnet schools success; mostly a happy account using an nontraditional method of integrating schools.
These issues will definitely continue throughout our lifetime, but I am hopeful that we will find solutions to improve education for everyone. I am particular optimistic in the future because of the increased openness in the future generations (due to increased exposure to diversity). It will be the American spirit, to want to help others in need and create opportunity for all, that will push the most advancement.
If you haven't listened to This American Life, you should definitely check out the show and you can even stream any of their over 500 episodes online for free.
