Waiting for a Package
There are days where I eagerly await for a package arrive not knowing the approximate time of arrival. But to be honest, 83% of the time, my life is not substantially affected by what I'm waiting to be delivered. I'm sure you've felt the same way (I think...).
But imagine if you were to receive a package that would change the world forever. Well, that's the Tizard Mission essentially did in September 1940. The Tizard Mission was a knowledge transfer that changed the course of World War II; Britain to the USA during the Battle of Britain.
'According to James Phinney Baxter III, Official Historian of the Office of Scientific Research and Development: "When the members of the Tizard Mission brought one [cavity magnetron] to America in 1940, they carried the most valuable cargo ever brought to our shores".'
The technology including radar (including the cavity megnetron), engines, weapons, and even the feasibility of the atomic bomb. At the time of the knowledge transfer, Britain was immersed in battle against the Germans in the Battle of Britain so they didn't have the resources for development and production. The best way to help to win the war was to simply hand the technology to the United States, which was still neutral in WWII, in exchange for financial/production help. And all the documents were delivered in one trunk... Imagined if that package was destroyed... The fate of the world could have turned out differently.
