Yahoo! Tech
A couple months ago, I wrote about how Yahoo did not have an identity and did a quick review of how terrible the company's site was. To most, Yahoo is an internet company with search and content. With news that Yahoo is for sale, I thought I would look at Yahoo Tech. Yahoo Tech was created in 2013, led by former New York Times technology columnist, David Pogue.
There was no doubt that David Pogue had the ability to explain technology to the average person. But after three years, here is the product:

As you can see, Yahoo Tech is just as terrible (if not worse) than the other Yahoo sites. The front page is filled with messy various-sized tiles. There are also tons of click-bait ads integrated with the tech tiles. This is a pattern throughout Yahoo's sites and it seems that Yahoo has much worse ads (read click-bait) than its competitors like Facebook or Google. The experience of users clicking on them probably affects them negatively.
Note the categories: Home, Review, Hot, Deals, Video, Games, Pogue, Apple. I don't see how these were decided. The approach seems to be misaligned with user's needs and is all around confusing.
In the second screenshot, an advertisement covers the entire page with no reviews at first glance.
For a tech site, you would expect some modern web technology to be used. Maybe videos playing within the same page? Nope, not on Yahoo Tech.
Though, I must say that the mobile version of the site is a slightly better experience (because it is simple and not as messy). Pogue makes decent content for the average person to understand, but it seems to be a waste on Yahoo Tech.
I would link you to Yahoo Tech but it's just an awful experience that I don't want you to go through it. But if you don't believe me, you should check the site out to see yourself.
Can Yahoo! be saved? Is it even worth the effort of trying to build the company up again?
